TechMentor 2-Day Hands-On Training Seminar: Building a PowerShell Module
June 21 – 22, 2022
9:00AM – 5:00PM (Central)
Level: Intermediate

When it comes to PowerShell scripting and toolmaking, building a PowerShell module is the ultimate goal. If you can write a PowerShell function, it doesn't take that much more effort to turn it into a PowerShell module. A module makes it easier to share your tools with others, including publishing it to the PowerShell Gallery.

TechMentor and Professional PowerShell (Emeritus) Jeff Hicks will teach you how to take your source material and turn it into a professional-grade PowerShell module. You'll learn best practices for structuring your module, handling the manifest, creating help documentation, and much more. Don't have anything ready to use in a module? Don't worry. Jeff will provide code samples that can be used throughout the course.

In this hands-on seminar, you will learn:

  • Best practices for PowerShell module development
  • How to create professional documentation and help
  • How to properly manage module source code and files

Attendee Workstation Requirements:
You must provide your own computer (Windows or Mac) for this hands-on lab workshop with a camera, Internet connection, speakers, and a microphone. You should have a Windows 10 or Windows 11 environment, preferably with PowerShell 7.2.1 installed. Demonstrations and examples will be done using PowerShell 7.2. You are welcome to follow along in Windows PowerShell 5.1, although you might have to make minor adjustments to account for version differences. You should have administrator rights and be able to install software and PowerShell modules, and execute PowerShell scripts.

It is recommended that you install Visual Studio Code, which you can download from https://code.visualstudio.com or install via winget or Chocolatey. You are welcome to use a scripting editor of your choice. All demonstrations will be done in VS Code.

It is also recommended that you install the latest version of `git.exe`. Again, you can install from winget, Chocolatey, or https://git-scm.com/. We won't be using sites like Github. We will spend some time getting familiar with VS Code and `git`, including configuration.
